Winter Highlights: Caring for Precious and Sensitive Stones

In our winter session, we covered essential cleaning and protection techniques for sensitive natural stone surfaces. We discussed the two main stone types—acid-sensitive and acid-resistant—and provided general guidelines for proper care and treatment. Here’s a summary of the products and tips discussed:

The Surface Treatment Cycle

To maintain your stone surfaces, we first covered FILA’s four essential steps:

1. Pre-Installation Sealing

Protecting stone begins before installation.

  • Use PW10 to safeguard against contaminants.
  • Follow with MP90 ECO PLUS as a pre-and post-grouting sealer for both polished and unpolished surfaces.

2. Post-Installation Cleaning

The right cleaner makes all the difference:

  • Acid-sensitive stone with a polished finish: Use STONECLEAN (neutral on surfaces).
  • Acid-sensitive stone with an unpolished finish: Use PS87 (alkaline).
  • Acid-resistant stone: Use DETERDEK (acidic) – always test an uninstalled sample for acidity before application.

We also covered the importance of avoiding acidic cleaners on acid-sensitive surfaces to prevent damage.

3. Protection

Sealing plays a critical role in preventing stains and water absorption. Key solutions in the presentation included:

  • MP90 ECO PLUS for a natural, invisible finish.
  • WET ECO for a glossy, enhanced look.

Both sealers are UV-resistant, preserve slip safety, and are certified for indoor air comfort—ideal for homes and commercial spaces alike.

For outdoor surfaces, we highlighted the importance of using water repellents like HYDROREP to:

  • Prevent mold and green deposits.
  • Protect against efflorescence.
  • Guard surfaces as they age.

4. Maintenance

To wrap up, maintenance was the final topic in this session. By following these simple practices, you can ensure your stone surfaces stay in excellent condition:

By following FILA’s simple yet comprehensive system, you’ll not only preserve the natural beauty of stone but also streamline your maintenance process, saving time and effort in the long run.

Spring Break-down: Spring Cleaning for Pros

Our spring workshop offered key techniques for keeping tiles and stone surfaces looking fresh year-round. Here’s a general overview of the products and tips shared:

Key Cleaning Techniques
  • Tiles: For post-installation cleaning, we recommend DETERDEK for cementitious grout and EPOXYOFF for epoxy, urethane and pre-mixed grout. For routine cleaning, CLEANALL is your go-to product, and for deeper monthly cleans, PS87 will keep your surfaces looking fresh.
  • Stone: When it comes to stone, STONECLEAN diluted at 1:30 is perfect for post-installation cleaning, while MP90 ECO PLUS is ideal for sealing, ensuring long-term protection, and maintaining the stone’s natural appearance. For ongoing care, dilute STONECLEAN at 1:200 and use PS87 for those more intensive monthly cleans.

These product recommendations are designed to simplify your routine while ensuring professional-level results.

Stain Removal

We also covered solutions for tackling stubborn stains:

Sealing

In the earlier sections, we highlighted the importance of sealing stone surfaces for long-lasting protection. As a reminder, FILA’s sealers, such as PW10, WET ECO, and MP90 ECO PLUS, not only help resist stains but also maintain surface breathability. These products are also Indoor Air Comfort Gold certified, ensuring a safe, healthy environment for both residential and commercial spaces.

Maintenance

To keep your surfaces looking fresh throughout the year, regular maintenance is key. As discussed, STONECLEAN and CLEANALL are perfect for ongoing care. For deeper monthly cleans, PS87 will help maintain the appearance of your surfaces.

Real-Life Applications

To put these techniques into practice, we shared real-life case studies showcasing the effectiveness of FILA products on surfaces like limestone, porcelain, and exterior tiles. These examples highlighted the unique cleaning and maintenance needs, from porous materials to outdoor surfaces.

Summer Insights: Real-Life Specs for Projects of All Sizes

In our summer training, we focused on creating successful project specs and treating various stone types. Here’s a summary of the insights shared:

1. What Is The Foolproof Method For Treating All Stone Types?

The FILA System is the ultimate solution for treating all stone surfaces, and includes:

  • Pre-treatment: Use PW10 for anti-contaminant protection and PRW200 or CONTRACTORS CHOICE as a grout release to prevent the ‘picture frame’ effect.
  • Post-installation cleaning: For epoxy, urethane and pre-mixed grout, use PS87, while STONECLEAN is great for cementitious grout.
  • Protection: Use MP90 ECO PLUS, our water-based, high-performing penetrating sealer.
  • Maintenance: Regular care is key to preserving the beauty of your stone. Use PS87 for deep cleaning and STONECLEAN for routine maintenance to keep surfaces in prime condition.

NB. An understanding of the pH scale and the unique properties of each stone type is key, especially when dealing with acid-sensitive materials. Avoid using acid cleaners on these surfaces to preserve their integrity.

Nevertheless, the FILA System provides a foolproof approach, saving you the guesswork and ensuring every project is completed efficiently and effectively.

2. How Do You Create A Project Spec That Ensures Success?

To create a successful project spec, understanding the stone material is key. Each stone type requires a tailored approach. At FILA, we conduct thorough testing to identify the best sealing and cleaning solutions. A well-prepared spec ensures optimal performance, prevents staining, and provides clear maintenance instructions for long-term care.

3. What Stops Efflorescence And Mineral Stains?

In the session, we also discussed PW10, an eco-friendly sealer that prevents streaks, stains, and efflorescence on absorbent stones like natural stone and terracotta.

4. Which Sealer Should I Use, Water Or Solvent-Based?

Here are some key features of water-based and solvent-based sealers:

Water-based sealer (MP90 ECO PLUS):

  • Quick-drying
  • Eco-friendly
  • Works with residual moisture

Solvent-based sealers (MP90 and FOB):

  • Ideal for more compact, less absorbent stones
  • Suitable for commercial high-traffic areas

5. What FILA Products Remove Stains In 15 Minutes?

To wrap up, we highlighted two products that eliminate stains quickly and effectively.

  • NOSPOT: Removes oil/grease stains from natural stone, marble, granite, and concrete.
  • SR95: Targets organic stains like coffee, wine, and tea, ideal for marble, travertine, and porcelain.

Fall Main Points: Outdoor Cleaning and Protection

In our fall webinar, we discussed the essentials of outdoor hardscape maintenance—from tackling seasonal stains to choosing the right care products for different surfaces. Here are the key points to keep your patios, walkways, and pool areas looking great and performing all year round:

1. Understanding Hardscape Challenges

Outdoor spaces face constant exposure to the elements, leading to:

  • Stains from leaves
  • Algae buildup
  • Organic dirt

Regular cleaning and timely maintenance help extend the life and visual appeal of these surfaces.

2. Knowing Your Surface Materials

Each material requires tailored care to avoid damage:

  • Acid-Sensitive Stones (e.g., marble, limestone, travertine): Use pH-neutral (polished) or alkaline (unpolished) products for cleaning. Avoid acidic solutions.
  • Acid-Resistant Stones (e.g., granite, slate, terracotta): Stronger cleaners like DETERDEK can be used for cement grout residues. Always test before applying.
  • Porcelain Pavers: Highly durable and ideal for acidic cleaners to handle stubborn stains and residues.

3. FILA’s Outdoor Care System

Proper care for outdoor surfaces—natural stone or porcelain pavers—starts with the right approach. From pre-treatment and post-installation cleaning to long-term protection and maintenance, tailored solutions ensure your hardscapes stay clean, durable, and visually appealing.

The FILA system ensures your outdoor surfaces stay protected with minimal maintenance, helping you focus on what matters most—getting the job done right.
