No installer wants to return to a completed job because grout haze has become visible after the surface has dried. Whether residue is removed while fresh or tackled during the end-of-work clean, choosing the right product for the task can make the process more efficient and help achieve a professional finish.
FILA offers two solutions for tackling cementitious grout residue: INSTANT REMOVER and DETERDEK PRO. Although both are intended for compatible acid-resistant materials, they have different application methods, timings and wider uses.
In this article, we look at the key differences between the two products, when to use each one and how they can support more effective cleaning on site.
The Main Difference: Fresh Grout or Cured Residue?
The simplest way to choose between the two is to consider the condition of the residue and the point the project has reached. INSTANT REMOVER is used while cement grout residue is still fresh and grouting is underway. By contrast, DETERDEK PRO is used once cementitious deposits have cured, including as part of a more thorough end-of-work clean.
Neither is simply a stronger or weaker version of the other – each is designed for a different cleaning requirement. In fact, a key reason fresh residue requires a different approach is the role water plays when cleaning the surface during grouting.

Why Repeated Water Cleaning Can Affect the Finish
When cleaning fresh grout residue during installation, the traditional approach often involves repeated passes with a sponge and clean water. The aim is to remove residue from the tile face without disturbing the fresh grout within the joints.
However, repeated washing can introduce more water than necessary. Depending on the grout and application method, excessive water during clean-up may contribute to colour variation or affect the finished surface of the joints. It can also spread diluted grout residue across the tiles rather than removing it fully, contributing to dull smears or haze once the surface dries.
Using a cleaning method designed specifically for fresh cementitious residue can reduce reliance on repeated water-only passes. This is where INSTANT REMOVER fits into the installation process.
When to Use INSTANT REMOVER
INSTANT REMOVER is a ready-to-use spray developed for cleaning fresh cement grout residue, including grout containing additives, during the grouting process.
It is used after the grout has initially set and become firm to the touch, but while the remaining residue on the tile face is still fresh. This allows the installer to act on the cementitious film before it cures and becomes more difficult to remove.
Following the preliminary clean with a damp sponge, the product is sprayed onto the surface to complete the cleaning process. Its non-foaming, rapid-dry formulation reduces reliance on repeated water-only passes and does not require the separate final rinse needed with an end-of-work cleaner. This also helps minimise downtime, although the sponge float should still be rinsed frequently during use.
This makes it particularly useful when the aim is to complete grout clean-up as work progresses and reduce the risk of dull smears or grout haze being left on the finished surface. Its use, however, is time-sensitive. Once cementitious residue has cured, DETERDEK PRO should be used instead.

How to Apply it
- Allow the grout to set: wait until it has initially set and feels firm to the touch. This generally takes around 10 to 30 minutes, although the grout manufacturer’s instructions should always take priority.
- Carry out the preliminary clean: use a sponge dampened with clean water to clean the surface.
- Apply the product: spray it evenly over the damp surface and allow it to act for one to two minutes, depending on the material finish.
- Complete the cleaning: use a damp sponge float to clean the surface.

Suitable Surfaces and Wider Uses
The product is suitable for porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles, glass mosaic and quarry tiles. It can be used indoors or outdoors, on walls and floors, and does not damage aluminium or steel trims when applied as directed.
Beyond cleaning the tile face, it can also be used to clean the backs of large-format tiles before laying. It is also suitable for cleaning grout floats and application tools before fresh cementitious residue hardens.
These additional uses make it a practical product to keep on hand throughout the active laying and grouting process.
When to Use DETERDEK PRO
DETERDEK PRO is a concentrated buffered-acid detergent developed for post-installation and end-of-work cleaning.
It should be used once cementitious residue has cured and can no longer be treated with a cleaner intended for fresh grout. This may include grout haze, post-application deposits and general building-site dirt remaining on the surface. Unlike the ready-to-use installation cleaner, it requires dilution, mechanical action with a large brush or single-disc machine, residue collection and a thorough final rinse.

How to Apply it
- Pre-wet the surface: wet the material thoroughly with clean water before applying the cleaner.
- Dilute the product: use a ratio of between 1:5 and 1:10, depending on the level of residue or dirt.
- Apply the solution: treat a few square metres at a time and allow the product to act for around five minutes.
- Work the surface: use a large brush or a single-disc machine fitted with an appropriate pad to loosen the deposits.
- Collect and rinse: remove the residues using a cloth or liquid vacuum cleaner, then rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water.
Where stubborn residues remain, repeat the process using a more concentrated solution, following the product instructions. As the process includes contact time and a final rinse, sufficient time should also be allowed for the surface to dry before the next stage of the project.

Wider Cleaning and Maintenance Uses
The uses of DETERDEK PRO extend beyond post-installation grout residue. It can remove saline efflorescence from terracotta and limescale from acid-resistant floors, showers and bathroom fittings.
It is also effective against rust stains and can help remove engobing marks from porcelain and ceramic surfaces. The cleaner can also be used for periodic maintenance of outdoor floors affected by smog, dust and visible signs of ageing, giving it a broader role in ongoing surface care.
Important Precautions
Neither product should be used on polished marble or other acid-sensitive materials. Carry out a preliminary test where compatibility is uncertain, and always follow the relevant product, grout and surface instructions.
Choosing The Right Cleaner for Your Project
Every installation is different, and the right cleaner will depend on when the residue is being removed and what else is present on the surface. Matching the product to the job can make cleaning more straightforward and help deliver the finish your client expects.
